Sharing Modules Among DNN Portals (Site Groups) BACK  ALL DNN TIPS
by Alan Amin

Sharing modules among DNN portals (i.e. site groups) is not an out-of-the-box functionality in the community edition; however, it is not completely unavailable. Starting from DNN 6.1, the functionality is built in the core, so no matter what edition you use, it does support module sharing. It is just "hidden" in the community edition.
Here is a simple way to "unhide" the functionality in the community edition. I tested it on DNN 7.0.0 - 7.1.2, and found out that Unisols Simple Articles works perfect when shared among sites. Here are the instructions:

NOTE 1: This procedure shares users and roles among portals too.
NOTE 2: Since we are going to run an SQL script against the backend database, I do not recommend beginners to use this method.
NOTE 3: Although this core functionality is available starting from DNN6.1, the user interface does not display the list of portals in DNN 6. The following procedure applies only to DNN 7
  1. Go to Host > SQL
  2. Paste the following code into the Script field:
    insert into {databaseOwner}{objectQualifier}PortalGroups values (0, 'My Portal Group', ' My Portal Group Description', 'http://example.com', 1, '2013-10-04', 1, '2013-10-04' ); update {databaseOwner}{objectQualifier}Portals set PortalGroupID = 1;
  3. Replace "example.com" in the code above with your own domain name
  4. On the same page, check "Run as script" down
  5. Click on the "Run Script" button.
  6. Click on Tools > Recycle Application Pool

That's it. Now you will see all your portals listed when you add an existing module.

Update: There is a free module (SiteGroup Editor for the DNN Platform) that creates site groups for community editions. If you are not comfortable with running SQL scripts, you can try the free module. I haven't tried it though.
